EU Directive on geological storage of carbon dioxide published
05.06.2009.
Directive 2009/31/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the geological storage of carbon dioxide was officially published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 5 June 2009. The directive defines the legislative framework for safe and reliable storage of CO2 in geological formations. Member states have now 2 years to implement the directive into their national legislation.
Full wording of the directive can be found here
Frequently asked questions and answers on the directive can be found here.
Simultaneously, further documents included in the “EU climate-energy package” were published, like e.g. the amendment of the Directive 2003/87/EC improving and extending the greenhouse gas emission allowance trading scheme of the Community (that incorporates CCS into the ETS system), or the Decision No 406/2009/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the effort of Member States to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (setting i.a. limits for greenhouse gases emissions in each Member State in 2020).

2nd CO2NET EAST workshop on CO2 capture and storage – Bratislava, 3-4 March 2009
10.11.2008.
After the successful 1st CO2NET EAST workshop on CCS for stakeholders from new EU Member States and Associated Candidate Countries held in Zagreb in February 2007, the CO2NET EAST project is organising the 2nd event of this kind, with the subtitle ‚CO2 Capture and Storage – Response to Climate Change‘. The workshop will také place in Bratislava, Slovakia, on 3-4 March 2009. The registration is open since 1 November 2008. CO2 storage at Ketzin started
(15-06-2008)
On 30 June 2008 the CO2SINK project consortium started geological storage of CO2 at the Ketzin test site near Berlin, Germany. During the next two years ca 60,000 tons of CO2 should be stored into a saline aquifer at a depth of more than 600 m. The Ketzin site is an “in-situ research laboratory” for testing onshore geological storage in aquifers; the related CO2SINK project is co-funded by the European Commission, German national R&D funds and industrial sponsors.

International Energy Agency launched International CCS Regulators Network
(15-06-2008)
The IEA with the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) and University College London (UCL) created a Network of CCS Regulators. The network should help with the development of legal and regulatory frameworks for CCS that is ongoing in a number of countries, incl. the EU. The Network will meet regularly to provide updates and exchange views on specific legal issues associated with the expansion of CCS worldwide.

Even earlier, on 2 April 2008, the Australian Otway project commenced injection of CO2 separated from extracted natural gas into a depleted gas field, and since that time 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide have been successfully stored underground. Approximately 100,000 tons of CO2 are expected to be injected in total within one to two years. The injection is accompanied by a comprehensive monitoring and verification programme.
